In March 2019 when I was still living in New York, I saw the Lincoln Center production of @mflontour. A year later, I saw it on tour at the Orpheum in Minneapolis (and reviewed it for One Fan Show!) right before everything shut down. Now, three years after *that*, director Bartlett Sher’s production is still traipsing around the country, and it’ll be in St. Paul at the @the_ordway March 21-25. Here’s the thing: if you have any shred of desire to see this show, get tickets before they sell out! This is a staging for the ages. Head to OneFanShow.com (or the link in my bio) to read my review about why this is an absolute must-see…and how the Star Trib got it completely wrong in their take 👀 #myfairlady #myfairladytour If you haven’t see Blues for an Alabama Sky at the @guthrietheater yet, you’ve got five more days! This is your official warning! I’ve got a full review on OneFanShow.com [link in bio] if you want to read about it before snagging tickets, but trust me on this one. Also trust me on the Ovation rec 🍸🍽️ #guthrieblues #guthrietheater #mpls Confession: I messed up big time. Blues for an Alabama Sky has been playing at the @guthrietheater since January 28th, but I just saw it this weekend. I didn’t realize that this production was straight-up Broadway-caliber magnificence. So now I’m telling you to go see this show, set in 1930 in Harlem, before it ends on March 12th. You’ve got 13 chances left. I’ve got a full review on OneFanShow.com (link in bio). Now go! On Friday I went to opening night of The Prom at @chanhassendt! Beth and I laughed, cried (OK, maybe just me), and had a ridiculously good slice of carrot cake at intermission. If you watched the Netflix take on this musical, FYI this version is waaaaay better. I’ve got a full review at OneFanShow.com (link in bio). And because I’m part of this great group of local theater writers, we’ve got a discount code to share: TCTB1, which will get you $20 off any show between now and March 12th!Also follow me on TikTok I guess! #chanhassendinnertheater #theprommusical A perfect Wednesday night. Step 1: Get a beer at @lakemonsterbrewing. Step 2: Eat an insanely delicious pizza made in a school bus by @thebrickovenbus. Step 3: See a production of Rent like no one has ever done before: with a cast made up entirely of seniors. I’d tell you to check out this #Theatre55 show, but I hear it’s fully sold out… hey, no day but today. On Thursday, January 26th, I saw a world premiere play about Ruth Bader Ginsburg that was adapted from a story created by @radiolab … at a high school in Minnesota. If you’re interested in ambitious theater being developed in this state, look no further than “Honk & Holler,” Minnetonka High School’s entry in this year’s statewide One Act Play Festival. @minnetonkatheatre got top marks in the first round of the competition last Saturday, so you can catch the show again in the sectionals this Saturday, February 4th at their home stage at MHS. Read more about the genesis of the show, the first staging of it, and when you can catch it this weekend at OneFanShow.com or at the link in my bio. Are you one of the millions who have read The Girl on the Train? Seen the movie? Surprise: it’s now a play, and it’s making its regional premiere (!!) in Minnesota at Lyric Arts in Anoka. I love this theater because it’s close enough to Minneapolis to drive after work and grab dinner in the vicinity before the show, but far enough that it feels like a proper outing. As for the show itself, I caught it on opening night (with a packed house!) and found the creative team had put together an incredibly ambitious multimedia staging that’s different than any theater has done before with this thriller. You can read my review at OneFanShow.com or by clicking the link in my bio. I saw a lot of theater in 2022 — not as much as I would have *liked*, especially in December when my final plans of the year were sidelined by Covid… — but a lot nonetheless. My biggest takeaway? We’re crazy lucky to live in Minnesota where we can see world premieres and revamped classics and cult-favorites alike at theaters big and small. Before we see what 2023 has in store, I wanted to recognize all the work that blew my damn mind in 2022. These are my five favorite musicals and plays of the year, and you can head to OneFanShow.com (link in bio) to read my full thoughts. Anyone else have a favorite that rocked your world this year?? Welcome to the Local! While it sure looks like a traditional Irish pub (the cluttered walls! The snowy windows! The stocked bar!) you’ll actually find this cozy hangout inside The Ritz as it’s the setting of @theaterlatteda’s new holiday show “Christmas at the Local” that’s making its world premiere now through January 1st. The musical (well, a concert with storytelling) is a hot ticket this season, and for good reason. Read my full review at the link in my bio to get the lowdown on what the vibe is like at the new pub in town…
